Discovery Food Programme – Story from the Printed Newsletter Spring 2011

Discovery Food Programme –

Discovery Food Programme, Dundee  is a free and confidential service that provides emergency food relief to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship within the City of Dundee as well as frontline advice and support regarding anti-poverty issues. The service is merely a short-term means (provision of food and advice) to a long-term end (people emerging out of poverty). Substance misuse, alcoholism, unemployment and underage teenage pregnancy are the biggest issues facing the community and more recently, the wider city, and the project has seen rapid growth since its inception in 2005. In 2010, 1,437 households citywide received food, benefitting an estimated 4,400 men, women and children.

Prayer has been central to the success and ongoing progress of the service. Team meetings are held on Wednesday mornings, primarily for devotion and prayer. Those in attendance never fail to be amazed at the many examples of answered prayer, particularly with regards to God’s continual provision. Over 4 million homes were exposed to the service through Channel 4’s ‘Secret Millionaire’ and frequent prayers of thanksgiving take place for the financial assistance, provision of food supplies and increased numbers of volunteers that have emerged as a result of this media coverage.

Prayer Points:

. Pray for Discovery Food Programme to continue to meet the rising demand for emergency food relief throughout the city of Dundee.
•Pray for additional churches, businesses and individuals to partner with Discovery Food Programme to answer Jesus’ call to serve the poor and aid in the recovery of our city.
•Pray for volunteers as they commence the additional rôle of providing frontline advice and support to clients about anti-poverty issues.
